Dear Friends of Hermitage,

Neeleshwar Hermitage has just won two awards from the World Luxury Awards: the Best Scenic Environment and the Best Beach Resort in India. We have also been nominated by the Boutique Hotels of the World. We are naturally delighted to have received such prestigious global recognition; this is our sixth award in only seven years of trading. All of them have been in effect a vote of thanks to the entire team at the hotel, from the front-office staff to those who work unnoticed behind the scenes. The hard work and dedication of the whole Hermitage family has made it possible to create and run a first-class retreat hotel in a part of northern Kerala that was completely unvisited by tourism until our arrival seven years ago.

From the beginning we have been keen to create an eco-friendly retreat that was integrated into the local community, and we have created 85 full time jobs and support a further 400 in their families in a part of the country where there were previously very few local jobs. So we can say our staff are really our partners too! 

As this award is for being a Luxury Hotel, it has set me thinking a little bit about just what luxury means in the 21^st century. So let me share a few thoughts on the subject with you.

In a world submerged by quantity, luxury is the lifeline of quality; for minds preoccupied with past and future, luxury is simply being present; in our overcrowded lives, luxury is having space; for those who suffer constant interruption, luxury is unbroken calm; in our unquiet world, luxury is the balm of silence.
